French Cooking In Williamsburg
Tucked away on the corner of Driggs Ave & S 3rd St, is the most charming cafe that will whisk you away to the streets of Paris. That intimate cafe is Bistro Petit.
Bistro Petit is owned and operated by Chef Sung Park. The space is small but quaint. A long counter looks into the kitchen, while another counter, looks out onto the street. I ventured into this lovely cafe for lunch and grabbed a seat at the kitchen counter.
Chef Park wasn’t there that day,but a very sweet and hard working Chef was. He served as the Chef, Server and Busser. Phew. The smells from the kitchen made me hopeful and after glancing at the menu, I decided to go with the Farro Mushroom Risotto.
Farro is an ancient grain that is similar to brown rice, but has a much nuttier flavor. It is rich in fiber, magnesium and vitamins A, B, C, and E. I HIGHLY recommend trying it.
As I drank my bottled water (very casual spot) I watched the Chef prepare my lunch with precision and care. You can tell he was classically trained. When I couldn’t wait a minute longer, he set a cast iron cauldron in front of me and my heart went pitter patter.
This exquisite dish consisted of Farro, Red Chard, Mild Mushrooms, Parmesan Cheese and White Truffle Oil. OH MY!! From my first forkful to my last, I was in heaven. Nutty farro mixed with meaty wild mushroom and swiss chard, in a creamy and cheesy sauce, with a hint of wine or vermouth. I couldn’t tell. But the cherry on the sundae, WHITE TRUFFLE OIL. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The dish was BRILLIANT and would satisfy any carnivore or herbivore.
I will warn you, be prepared to dine for a bit, because everything is made from scratch and the Chef is literally the butcher, baker and candlestick maker. Be patient.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE support this restaurant. They’re literally the little engine that could. They don’t server alcohol, so BYOB (no corkage fee). Their entrees are on the high end of the Cheapeats scale, but SO worth it.
Restaurants come and go. I sure hope they stick around for a very long time.
