Barilla Tortellini
Cheapeats was given the challenge to create a Italian style meal using Barilla Tortellini. Right away my creative juices got going. What could I come up with? Tortellini Bouillabaisse? Tortellini Semi Fredo? Nope. They just won’t make the cut. Ugh, this is going to be difficult.
Being Sicilian, I grew up on what many call “Peasant Food.” Our meals from the kitchen were simple but SSOOOO good. It was that memory that inspired me to create one of my favorite meals – Soup. But not just any soup…..Tortellini En Brodo.
Picture it – Sicily 1942. It’s an unusually cold winter. It’s snowing for the first time in 50 years. The kids are restless and there’s quite a chill in the air. There’s a roaring fire in the living room’s fireplace and Momma is cooking in the kitchen. Soon a voice yells out….” Vieni Qui” “E ‘ora di mangiare” The family rushes in and sits down to an enjoy a bowl of Tortellini En Brodo.
What is Tortellini En Brodo? A fancy name for tortellini in chicken broth or as I like to call it; “ITALIAN PENICILLIN.” Homemade chicken broth and Barilla tortellini on their own are good, but when they’re combined…..MAJIC. Every spoonful warms your belly and the pillowy pasta are like heaven in your mouth. A sprinkling of parmesan cheese is a must.
I could easily eat 2-3 bowls of this…. easy. With a basket of crusty bread, preferably garlic, and perhaps an arugula salad…… that is my perfect Italian meal.
