Where To Eat In Astoria?

Astoria Queens is all the craze these days. The secret is out. Many hipsters have migrated there, for cheap living and cheap eating. A bit of a walk from the train. but close to the water, is the most charming cafe and bake shop that only the locals know about….until now. What is this charmer? Astor Bake Shop.

Astor Bake Shop is located on the corner of Astoria Boulevard and 14th Street. I decided to check it out on a sunny afternoon for a late lunch. When I walked through the burgundy doors, my first reaction was charming. There were wooden tables throughout the space with a backdrop of white subway tiles and exposed brick. Their tasty treats are displayed at the front counter, while the open kitchen sits in the back.

Their blackboard menu is displayed above and behind the counter. It was a chilly day, so I definitely needed something warm. After reviewing my options, I decide to go with a Jasmine Green Tea and Lentil Burger.

I decided to grab a seat against the brick wall, with a great view of the cafe and street. Did I mention the storefront is all windows? My server brought me my hot tea and I gingerly sipped it, while answering my emails from my phone. Before long, my meal was set down in front of me.

The lentil burger was like a work of art on a plate. Picture it…A plump burger sitting on a toasted bun, served with lettuce, tomato and pickled onions. Drizzled on top,  was a yummy yogurt sauce. It was served with a small mesculin green salad that was dressed in a light vinaigrette. No guilt here. I decided to skip the bun and go right for the burger and fixings.

This lentil burger was moist and bursting with flavor. The outside crust from being pan seared, gave it just the right amount of crunch, that you would typically find on a beef burger. The mixture of textures combined with the tangy yogurt sauce and sour of the pickled onions, hit all my senses – Sweet, Sour, Salty and Savory. GREAT CHOICE.

I chatted a bit with the server and learned that they now serve  brunch and dinner with wine and beer. Could be a great spot for a CHEAP DATE? Hint…Hint. From my table, I texted all my Queens friends and told them they MUST check this place out.

I’d like to say that I had room for dessert, but I didn’t. But from the looks of them, I will be back.
