Business Lunch On A Dime

I’m often asked if I could recommend a great spot for a business lunch that won’t break the bank. Obviously a tough one because you want to impress without having to sacrifice your first born.

No need to worry because I have one for you.

HK or Hell’s Kitchen is a great find in the Hell’s Kitchen/Clinton nestled in between the garment center, Lincoln Tunnel and Port Authority Bus Terminal. Don’t throw your nose up, this is the latest up and coming area.

When you reach the corner of W39th & 9th Ave, you’ll see a corner of windows welcoming you in. The inside is very “Downtown Chic” with a cool vibe.

While talking business, my co-diner and I glanced over the menu. I’m impressed. Creative salads, sandwiches and entrees. I ordered the Grilled Salmon Caesar Salad which was perfectly grilled. The greens were crunchy and the dressing was creamy and tangy without being overly cheesy. Absolutely perfect.

I loved this place so much, I’ve had numerous business meetings/lunches there since. My other recommendations? Asian Tuna Salad and the best Salmon burger I’ve ever had. Meaty, full of flavor and filling. I swear it looks like a real burger but so much better. Topped with a wasabi sauce…TO DIE FOR. At every meeting the response was the same….”I’ve never knew this place was here.” “The food is outstanding.”

I will say I didn’t have the same experience in the evening. I suggested HK for a friend’s business dinner and tagged along for the ride. The menu changes and so does the quality. We first ordered a bunch of appetizers. French Onion Soup Dumpling which was basically a deconstructed onion soup. Boring. Shrimp Tempura – just a ball of dough. The Lobster Risotto was really just rice with a little lobster and flavor. Everyone else at the table said their dishes were just OK not great. Not the reaction wanted for this dinner. Sorry!!! If there’s a different chef for the eve, follow the day chef’s lead. That menu and food are outstanding.

They do also have a bar scene and can be rented out for parties. They offer Happy Hour discounts from 5-7pm. Buy 1 drink and the other is either free or 1/2 price. Can’t remember. I was considering them  for future  events for Cheapeats but not sure after the disappointing dinner. Perhaps will give them an opportunity to redeem themselves.

In any event, do try HK for lunch or business meeting. That I promise won’t disappoint.
