Chiles, Chocolate and Chicken…Oh My

ChilesWhen you think of Mexican food, what comes to mind? Enchiladas, Nachos, Guacamole? Mexican food is so much more than that. On a recent venture to Park Slope, I decided to try this local spot called Chiles & Chocolate. They feature a menu from Oaxaca. What happa? No…Oaxaca. It’s an area down south that often mixes Chiles, Chocolate, Pumpkin Seeds and Spices.

This spot features small round wooden tables up front. Walk past the tiny kitchen and you’ll see pots of  sauces simmering on the stove. What’s in those pots? They said it’s a secret. I would recommend dining out back under the white draping tent with vintage chandeliers and Spanish music playing in the background. With a little humidity…it’s Mexico.

I ordered Mole Negro which is an authentic dish of this region. My chicken (make sure you order dark meat) was covered in this rich and dark sauce. My only complaint was that it needed a little salt. Don’t go here if you’re in a rush. Be prepared to stay for a while. These sauces take time and are not to be rushed.

If you want to take a quick trip to this region, just head to Brooklyn. No passport required.
