A Little Piece Of Puerto Rico in Astoria

One of the great things about New York is it’s cultural diversity. The term “Melting Pot” has been used for years, because we’re a melting pot of numerous nationalities. This is expressed through art, language, music, customs and of course food. Recently, Cheapeats got to sample the foods from Puerto Rico. Let me tell you….it was a P A R T Y.

Don Coqui is a Restaurant and Nightclub in Astoria, located at 28-13 31st Street. Their menu features classic Puerto Rican dishes and well as American classics.  We gladly accepted their invitation to sample their fare.  So we grabbed our Queens tasters and off we went. It was a Friday night and the place was jumping.

When you enter the doors, the bar is to your left, dance floor in the middle and the restaurant is to your left. The restaurant is sleek, modern and monochromatic white. The vibe is Fiesta and that is what they will supply. The tunes were playing, the drinks were pouring and the people were eating.

The Hostess sat us at a table where we could get a birds eye view of the festivities. There was Ladies celebrating someone’s birthday. TGIF celebrations and us, a couple of girls catching up and enjoying a good meal. We were handed our menus, ordered some cocktails and away we went.

My friend ordered the Ropa Vieja, which is shredded beef in a tomato based sauce. It’s served with rice and beans and fried plantains. The meat was buttery and tender and the portion was HUGE.

The other taster ordered Plantain Crusted Red Snapper. It was served with mashed yuca and sauteed vegetables. Another hit. Fish was light and flaky and again a healthy portion.

I decided to go with the Seafood Paella. My bowl was filled with clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops and lobster. No matter how many bites I took, the plate still looked full. So much food, that we all took doggy bags home and had another meal for the next day.

If you’re looking for a place to celebrate, date night, drinks and just have a good time…head to Don Coqui. A good time will be had.
