The Best Mac & Cheese In NYC
Ever have one of those days when you get a craving for something and can’t shake it? Well that was me recently. I had a craving for good old Mac & Cheese. Trying to find a place to grab lunch, all I could think of was Mac & Cheese. But not the kind that comes out of a blue box, the real deal. But it isn’t easy to find.
Racking my brain and trying to figure out where I can go to satisfy my craving, I suddenly remembered a spot nearby. So I headed down 2nd Ave to the mother ship…..S’Mac.
S’Mac is a little cafe in the East Village that serves one thing and one thing only….Mac & Cheese. The interior is orange & yellow, very much like the color of cheese. The formica tables all have a plastic basket containing silverware, napkins and condiments. You head up to the counter and choose from their recommendations, such as All-American, 4 Cheese, Cheeseburger, to name just a few. Or you can build your own from the various fix-ins and mix-ins.
I decide to go with Sarita’s recommendation – The Alpine. Hanging on the brick wall are a variety of skillets, signifying your size options – Nosh, Major Munch, Mongo and Partay. Realizing my choice is rich, I go with the Nosh. Smart choice. I’m given a number on a stand and find a table in the corner by the window.
As I glance around, I realize this place is hopping. What’s taken me so long to try them? Then I see a vision approaching, holding a steaming and crackling frying pan. “Here you go #5….Enjoy.” I will.
The aroma that fills the air, lets me know I made the right choice. Elbow macaroni – cooked al dente, in a gooey cheesey sauce made from gruyere cheese and chunks of slab bacon. YUMMY!!!! I especially love the crispy burnt edges. This sinfully delicious pan satisfied my craving and then some. With an iced tea, my lunch came in at $10.
The problem is that I can’t stop thinking about my meal. I now have to fight the temptation of indulging again. Damn you S’Mac!!!
Happiness, $25 and under.
