Outstanding Taqueria

New York City is known for outstanding restaurants and every type of ethnic cuisine imaginable. One type of eating we absolutely fall short on is Mexican. I mean we have Mexican food but not like what you will find on the West Coast or in the Southwest. Ask any West Coaster and they will agree.

Needless to say I was estatic when a West Coaster told me about a new Taqueria in Union Square that is serving up authentic Mexican cuisine.

Dos Toros Taqueria was started by two San Francisco brothers who moved to New York and couldn’t find a decent taco. Tell me about it. So what did they do….. open up their own Taqueria.

If you walk down 4th Avenue near East 13th Street, you’ll see a line of patrons waiting to get their hands on some good eats. Lines, I hate them but I’m told it’s worth the wait. Burritos, tacos, quesadillas and platters…easy enough. Wait, am I reading the menu right?  Each taco is only $3.67? I’ll have a chicken and a beef with guacamole (46cents extra) please. I take mine to go because the few tables they have are packed.

I head home with my order salivating the entire way. I can’t wait to bite in. Finally, the moment of truth. I unwrap the paper, take a bite……FANTASTICO. It’s a filling of fresh chicken with pico de gallo, spices, cheese and avocado wrapped in a soft corn tortilla. I’m in TACO HEAVEN. I could eat this everyday. Don’t let the size fool you, they are filling. The choices are easy beef, chicken, pork or vegetarian.

Mexican food can be heavy and filled with trans fat but their’s aren’t. They use local antibiotic free meats. Local beans. They composte their kitchen waste. Use non-toxic plant based cleaners. Reclaimed wood tables. Renewable energy and all their packaging is biodegradable.  Good for my belly and the environment? Standing ovation please.

Folks…..however long the line is, WAIT. The prize at the end is so worth it.

Happiness, $25 and under.

Good and real Mexican food is here in New York City, it just is not found in the same manner as LA or SF. There is less of a culture for this food here (non-Latins wanting it), so you don’t find it as easily. You have to go to Jackson Heights and Corona, or Sunset Park to get the best. You go into tiny places that look like delis and find the cook in the back. And only there will you find the real deal, not these California gringo “Mexican” food joints like Dos Toros. West coasters complain all the time about the lack of Mexican here, but to me this just equates to laziness or an unwillingness to experience the parts of the city that Mexicans actually live in. If Manhattan is the sample size, then ok, you have a point, but with all the people from every region of Mexico living here in the city, there is plenty of amazing food. Let me know if you would like to know a couple of my favorites, I’m more than happy to share!
