A Lesson In Cheapeating

PizzaIf you remember, my last post talked about my friend’s embarrassment in trying to eat out on the cheap. Did she mend her silly ways? Read on and see.

I rounded up the girls for dinner so everyone could relax and catch up. OK Miss Cheapeats, where can we go to satisfy carnivores, vegetarians and vegans? Totonno’s.

Totonno’s is an old fashioned Italian eatery that’s been around since 1924. It originated in Brooklyn (my roots) and has outlets in NYC for those that refuse to cross the bridge or go threw the tunnel. It was a beautiful evening, so dining al fresco was a must. They seemed full so we anticipated a wait. The hostess saw us, asked 2 gentleman to leave their table and immediately sat us. Was it something we said? No, that was my husband and his friend. He’s not a paying customer so when someone is, he gets the boot. Gotta love a girl from Brooklyn.

OK Lisa, my friend, I’m going to show you just how well you can eat on a budget. Her partner had never had authentic New York Pizza so pizza it is. We ordered a large pie and 1 small one with no cheese, an order of Broccoli with garlic and oil and a grilled portobello mushroom salad.

The pizza came out and was bubbly with fresh mozzarella and a sweet tomato sauce. The star of the table for me was the salad. Fresh arugula with chopped tomatoes, black olives, red onion, large grilled portobello mushrooms dressed in a balsamic vinaigrette with shaved parmesan cheese on top. Crunchy, fresh and delicious. I honestly could have made a meal of just that.

So let me recap – 2 pizzas, salad, broccoli and a couple of soft drinks. The bill for 4 people came out to $18 a head including tax and tip. And leftovers to boot.

Lisa, have I made a believer out of you? Yes  Cheapeats….I believe!!!!

Happiness, $25 and under.
