Frugal Traveling
What is cheap to some is frugal to others. Let’s face facts. Traveling can be expensive but with a little ingenuity, it doesn’t have to be.
My trip to SF started out with a taxi ride to Kennedy Airport. What happened to the $30 flat fee? Well, it’s now $45. Ouch! Has it been that long since I’ve flown? Land in SF and it’s another $35 for a taxi to my hotel. Almost $100 before my trip even begins. Yikes!
Hotel location is key. I stayed at Galleria Park Hotel in Union Square which was a good central location. This boutique hotel was hip, cool and offered free wi-fi. I will say, the wi-fi in my room wasn’t working but for those that it did, great convenience. I did get a reduced rate for the event I was attending but their rates are very competitive.
Now for my tour of San Francisco. There are many tour & trolley buses that will take you to the SF sites but they run $45 & up. My solution, walk. It’s free and fun. My feet took me to the Market Terminal, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, Lombard St and Nob Hill. I love walking a city because you can stop and browse at your leisure.
When I left, the question was “To taxi or not to taxi.”. Answer…not. If you don’t have a lot of luggage, you can take the BART to the airport. Depending where you are, it can cost under $10. I had bulky bags so I took the Bay Shuttle. They picked me up from my hotel at the designated time and were prompt. Yes, there are other passengers but for $11, who cares.
I pre-planned my ride from JFK -home by using Super Shuttle. I gave them my flight details in advance. When you arrive, just call on the house phone and your driver arrives in minutes. Again, you do have others on the van and multiple stops but for 1/2 of the cost of a taxi ($24), I will be patient.
I may never taxi again.
